When is it time to quit?
Recently, one of my clients quit their job while another of my clients decided to stick it out. In both cases, the clients were unhappy and experiencing anxiety or stress. How to decide when it's time to quit?
I've read a good number of doom and gloom articles about the horrendous job market and even seen writers argue you should NEVER quit unless you have a new job lined up. This is basically sound advice in that it is definitely an employer's market right now ... BUT…and it's an important BUT…if you wake up sick to your stomach every morning after tossing and turning all night…quitting might be the lesser of evils. For one client last week, quitting was the better option. For the client that didn't quit -the equation was different.
What is likely prudent in any market, but particularly a tough one like this, is to make sure you plan well financially. If you have to quit, or if you are let go out of the blue, you don't want to have to panic about how you will put food on the table. In other words, FUTURE PROOF. I'm not saying it's easy for everyone to save and be ready for a rainy day, but if at all possible, please do go get the BIGGEST umbrella that you can!
Footnote: I have another client who knew exactly when it was time to quit. They planned carefully and saved sufficiently so that they could weather a long period without income and execute a complete career pivot.
